Answer: Well ... We've always done it like that. Does this sound familiar? Whenever we take on a new client and regularly from then on, we always make a point of reviewing current systems and practices and we are not afraid to make suggestions where we think things can be improved. Even when just carrying out a statutory audit we want to go beyond just ticking the numbers. Here's a small example: A client is in the fortunate position of being "cash rich". So they have a "Business Reserve Account" (deposit account to you and me). All receipts are paid into the current account and about once a week the MD transfers an amount to or from the deposit account. Note that his bank offer an automatic sweep facility but this was extremely expensive. The above works fine but here's a better idea. Pay all receipts into the deposit account and once a week transfer some money out of the deposit account to cover the following weeks known liabilities. This means that the average balance on the deposit account is always just about as high as possible. In the above case, we estimate that that company earns additional interest of over £450 every year from just a simple suggestion. |
